When No One Is Watching

The world of technology today never stops amazing me. For some of our parents out there the new security camera systems, could be just what they need.

A friend of mine had some vandalism problems early last summer. So they purchased a security camera and mounted it out on the porch. It took about one week and what they had expected as child vandalism was explained away. It seems they had inherited a very frisky raccoon and he was really playing havoc with their yard ornaments and trash bins.

They really felt silly when they recalled all the harsh thoughts they had about... more

Family Watch Dog A Parents Best Friend

Posted by : Sharlene in Older Child Adoption Blog at 03:38 pm , 364 words, 49 views
Categories: Family Safety

The Family Watch Dog is a well known web site that allows you to type in your address and bring up a current map of any Child Sex Offenders that may be living in your area.

Everyone has rights and I respect that. Until they do something that makes your rights and the rights of your children more prominent than theirs.

It is always good to know the hot spots in your surrounding community. When do most of the trouble makers hang out and where is it safe for your children to play.

Child Cell Phones In The News

Posted by : Sharlene in Older Child Adoption Blog at 09:42 pm , 384 words, 43 views
Categories: Family Safety

Everyone is concerned with keeping their children safe during the summer. It is no surprise that the cell phone industry is addressing this issue with dollar signs in their eyes.

All the top cell systems are coming out with their own child safety cell phone. The Migo is one of the top products on the market and the company can not keep them in supply. The demand for the phone was more than the market could handle.

Of course this lead to another company placing their line on the shelves also. Now there is a new twist. One that... more

Community Awards For Bike Safety

Posted by : Sharlene in Older Child Adoption Blog at 06:33 am , 225 words, 27 views
Categories: Family Safety

One of the coolest events of the summer in our community is the "Bike Safety" campaign.

When the police see a child who is practicing safety rules while riding their bike (helmet on) They pull them over and give them a bike safety award. It is a coupon for a free ice cream at our local McDonalds and a round sticker for their bike.

The children can be caught "Being Safe" by every officer in our city at different times of the day.

Angela got her first sticker on Monday. She came home just to tell me she won the first safety... more

Bug Wipes or Bug Spray ?

Posted by : Sharlene in Older Child Adoption Blog at 08:56 pm , 341 words, 59 views
Categories: Family Safety

Well it is summer in full swing now in our town. The mosquitoes are out and dive bombing every human in sight. Every night Angela has begged me to get the itch cream.

Poor little kids can not play without being eaten by the blood bugs. I have been checking the products for safety before I use them on the kids. I have tried Deep Woods Off Spray and the new Wipes.

We have put out bug zappers and candles. We have put out the lawn torches. Now I am waiting to try the new Avon Bug Spray. The Skin So Soft has its reputation for being helpful with bugs.

I still think one of the best ways to protect the skin is to wear socks and cover as much of the sensitive areas of... more

Product Review: The Dragon Fly or The Amigo

Posted by : Sharlene in Older Child Adoption Blog at 06:54 am , 335 words, 37 views
Categories: Family Safety

They have finally come out with a limited call phone for children. The famous "Dragon Fly" offered by Sprint has four buttons and an emergency button in the center.

Parents can choose which 4 numbers their child can call. Mom, Dad, Home or a Friend. Or Home, The Police, Fire Department and School. It could be a series of people from Grandma to his Pediatrician. But always in the center is the 911 button for any emergency any where at anytime.

However, this little fire fly is so popular that they are sold out across the country.... more

Cuts and Bruises

With the weather so beautiful out. I am sure our children are going to be out there playing in full force soon.

School is almost out for the year and summer is just around the next corner. So it might be nice to brush up on some of the basics of emergency home medical care.

One of the most common sources of injury usually happens to the skin. A child falls off a bike or runs into a toy in the yard and the next thing you know they appear before you with scrapes, cuts and bruises.

When this happens you want to make sure the abrasion is cleaned correctly to prevent infections. You also may want to apply a cold compress to a bruise to prevent swelling or apply pressure... more

Get On The Buddy System

Posted by : Sharlene in Older Child Adoption Blog at 10:26 pm , 427 words, 34 views
Categories: Family Safety

Ok mom and dad. It is time to refresh the kids on what the buddy system is.

As summer gets off to a fresh start. Kids are out playing in the yards and riding their bikes. The parks are drying out and the kids are beginning to congregate for baseball and play time.

It is all part of the nice weather and the newness of the grass and flowers. It makes you feel good to look out and see color. Instead of snow.

With all the good stuff summer brings. It also brings some bad stuff with it too. Thinking about people harming other people just takes the fun out of life. But it happens so we must take a few precautions to keep our kids safe and having fun.

Sexual Abuse and STDs

Posted by : Sharlene in Older Child Adoption Blog at 10:37 pm , 330 words, 39 views
Categories: Family Safety

Unfortunately we live in a world where children are exposed to so much abuse, at such a tender age. The stories of what happens to our kids never grow old. It is no wonder that the abuse is so difficult to live through and to survive alone.

No child who has been abused likes to talk in details of what happened to them. They just want to put it in the past and hope they can forget it.

But as we all know, different events in life will trigger the memories. A healthy survivor of child sexual abuse will move through each occurrence and become stronger each time.

Some of the events known to trigger memories are:

1). First Boy/Girl Friend 2). Parental... more
