Recently a very close friend of mine applied to adopt a child from a distant member of her family.
She did not do the research that one would do when adopting a child with no Family Background.
It seemed a waste of time to her because she was in fact blood related to the child she was planning to adopt.
On the child's placement in her home she completed all the paper work for the child to begin school.
However, she had to have the child seen by a physician and have the child's shots up dated for her new little girl to attend school.
The doctor was a family friend and did all the routine tests on the little girl. Everything seemed to be just fine and they were adjusting to their new life as mother and daughter.
It took about two weeks before the doctor had all the test results back. When he called her and asked her to come into the office again she asked why.
The little girl she was adopting had Diabetes. With today's medicines and the many break through in helping children deal with child onset diabetes.
There was no doubt that they would just handle her illness as well as they could. However since her adoption was a private adoption she did not have the resources that would have been available to her had she gone through an agency.
This is one of the basic reasons that adoption works best for families and children. If a child is ill and has an illness that will need continued medical treatment through out the child's life. It is often a good thing to request the medical subsidy
and insurance coverage that a state adoption can help provide for the child.
Then if you at some point have a loss of income and personal medical insurance. You have the peace of mind that the child still is covered and can get the best care that state medical can provide.
That is why a good family medical history is something that you should always ask about. Even in a world where we have modern technology and medical break through's every day. It is still good to know what medical issues may be lurking in the genes of your adopted child.
It also gives doctors a place to begin if your child is having symptoms of any illness. Just a little food for thought that can take the hassle out of needless worry. Illness can happen even if the child you adopt comes from a branch of your own family. In my friends case it happened.
The most important thing is to protect the child as well as you can. So ask about medical subsidy if you are in the process of adopting a child with possible medical history.
