As parents dealing with a child who has an issue of bed wetting can often be frustrating. We try everything from cutting back on the amount of fluid intake the child has. Making sure the child uses the bathroom before bed. We may even wake them up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom also.
Sometimes none of these help. Sometimes they do. Some parents have tried embarrassment which I highly disagree with.
If you have tried all you can possibly think of maybe a visit to the doctor is a great idea. They can do a few tests and rule out any physical issue that might be causing the problem.
There are devices that can be placed on the child's bed that have an alarm and will wake the child at the point of wetting the bed. These are helpful but again it takes time to work. It will help the child wake from a deep sleep when the alarm sounds and the body will recognize the need to use the bathroom, helping the child learn to be mentally aware of his body's needs.
There are a few drugs that have been used with some success. One is Tofinil, which helps the child be more aware of the bodies need for the bathroom. This does work. But again it takes time for the body to learn to alert itself to personal needs.
Bed wetting is something most people just grow out of. But parents who have dealt with a child with a bed wetting issue that has lasted into the teen years know how humiliating it is to the child. It also is a source of frustration and anger to the parent.
That is why clean up needs to be taught to the child and they should be willing to help out. This can take some of the stress and anger out of the situation.
There is help out there so don't be afraid to talk to your doctor and see what the latest treatment is for this problem.
Keep the faith and work with your doctor and one day you will be waking up to dry beds. There are millions of other people out there just like you who have struggled with this problem. You are not alone.
