When we are little our family teaches us manners. They may even take us to church where we learn more about religion and spiritual beliefs. When we get in grade school our teachers teach us all sorts of good things like how to share and how to respect one another.

All of this lays a good basis for character building. What are some things that you can learn that will build your character and help you become who you are:

1). Trustworthiness 8). Appreciation
2). Respect 9). Communication
3). Responsibility 10). Friendship
4). Fairness 11). Listening
5). Caring 12). Anger Control
6). Citizenship 13). Resolving Conflicts
7). Cooperation 14). How To Say NO

These are just a few things that we can learn that will help us resolve issues as they arise in our life.

Making good friendships. Choosing the right people to be friends with. People who share the things you like and people that interest you. Most of all people who will not teach you bad social habits.

Learning to communicate and asking for help when you need it. Every question deserves an answer.

Practice being fair. Cooperate with your class, teacher or parent. Be patient give them time to express what they mean. Share toys and other fun activities.

Learn about your feelings. Why things make us sad or happy, mad or excited. Find ways to express how you are feeling it can help you make better decisions even when you are angry.

Learn how to resolve conflicts. What can you do or say to make your friend or yourself not be mad anymore? Can you talk about how you feel? Instead of acting out and getting into more trouble.

Most of all learn to care and appreciate others. In doing so you will also learn to care and appreciate the person you see in the mirror.

You are important to your family, friends, teachers and this world. You belong right here and you are doing what you are here to do. Learning to be a good person.

Who knows where the footsteps of life will lead you. You could be president or a congressman or congresswoman, a doctor, lawyer or just a mom or dad. In all cases who you are and what you have to say are important to others around you.

Each person in your family helps draw a picture. How they act and what they say and do expresses the family as a whole. That is why mom or dad or grandpa or grandma are always proud of you when you do good deeds. You are a reflection of your family.

In an adoptive family there may be several different nationalities or skin colors. There maybe different kids who speak different languages.
We all have hair, skin, a face, two legs and two eyes. Well ok maybe not two legs or eyes because even those can be different in people with handicaps. But we are very similar.

So as each individual comes into a family you can have a world of differences in some things and be very much alike in others. But each person learns to build their very own character. To control their very own actions. To express their very own feelings. It is all in the process of being You!

So as you work on building yourself by learning more about your own character. You also help to build your family's character. So be smart you are off to a great start.
