For all of those parents out there with teenage drivers. It is time to instill some good safety tips for fall driving.
I know several foster and adoptive students that are taking drivers education at our local high school.
Some of which are responsible young people and a few of them I would not let near the road more or less my car. (Giggle)
Parents are left to give most of the driving skills in our area. The drivers training instructor only has about six hours to devote to each young driver.
So if a parent wants to make sure their child is a safe driver. They have to put in a few on the road hours with their child.
We have taken our daughter out to rural roads. It is safer for her to learn with no other cars involved when she is turning and learning to balance the excel orator and the brake as well as watch her speed limit.
For parking we take her to one of the malls after hours and let her practice. Then after she has been with the drivers instructor for a few times. We take her out on the roads. Teaching her to maintain a safe driving distance and to be prepared to stop at all times.
One of the seasonal hazards of driving in fall weather is that the deer and other wild animals seem to come closer to the road ways in order to find food.
So in teaching your child to concentrate on the road we must also teach them to be observant on the side of the road. In our area a deer can appear from out of no where in a moments notice.
So we try and point out the shiny eyes of the animals off to the side of the road way at dusk.
We also let our young driver know that sometimes the animal will freeze when your lights hit them.
With fall weather the roads are sometimes a little wet from the morning dew or the cool rain. So extra moments of learning to recognize black ice and maneuver your car while in slippery conditions are called for also.
What other safety tips can you think of to add to our
advice for driving in fall weather. Remember also to watch for kids....it is Halloween season also.
