One of the first things that will happen when you begin your paper work and journey to adopt. Will be a home study.

The hone study is when someone will come into your home and expect it for safety and living conditions.
So you can cut some time off of your adoption wait by having your home in order.

1.) Make sure electrical out lets are up to date and have covers.
2.) Make sure your sink, toilet and bathtub have both hot and cold running water and are in decent shape.
3.) Make sure the room where your new adopted child will be sleeping is open and has a bed, dresser and contains a homey feeling. A few toys or wall decor would be nice.
4.) Make sure any or all pets that need vaccinations are up to date and there to be introduced to the worker.
5.) Do a safety inspection on your own if something looks like it is in need of repair. Then fix it.
6.) Every lamp should have a lamp shade.
7.) Cleaning Supplies and other chemicals should be kept up in a safe place away from the reach of children.

8.) Your home should be child friendly. Nothing that could harm a child like glass items should be left on tables where children could get to them easily.

One other thing is to be relaxed and just answer questions honestly. How your parents raised you may not be how you will raise your child.

Think about how you would handle discipline in your home. What type of family outings you may like to share with your child. Will Church be something you and your child may attend often. Check out how close the schools, hospitals and day care areas are to your home.

Just simple little things like that can help you pass your home inspection easily and keep you on track to adopting your child. Good Luck to all.

Any other suggestions out there that someone can add.
It has been eleven years since my first home study. I am sure there are new and more up to date items that others can add to this post. All comments are welcomed.

Our home study was more about seeing where we were as a couple and as a family. There was a very simple inspection of the premises, mostly to see that we had smoke detectors and that nothing was fishy. The counselor spent far more time on the family and our reasons for adopting and our extended family support. I never felt that I was being scrutinized for my way of living or my ability to parent in a style that met certain critera.
