Parents have so many things to accomplish on a daily basis. They stay busy with getting the kids out of bed and dressed for school. They make sure there are clean clothes and food on the table. They may work a full time job out side of home.
They have to pay bills and maintain the house and car.
So it is no question that they may not have enough time to sit down with the kids and do home work.
They may even have to cook diner as they try to encourage the kids to get home work done.
They may not be up to date on teaching skills for the new math or English being taught in todays class. How many of us have helped out children to an assignment and then have them get a bad grade on it because "we" did it wrong?
Your child needs to know that learning is important.
That school is not just a social activity. They need to know their grade is like their "Paycheck" for work well done.
So how do we get the kids to take education more seriously? How do we influence them to Learn?
I think every parent struggles at one point with this issue. One child excels in school, the other child is not passing. One child loves to read, the other child won't even touch a book unless you make him/her.
Education in the home needs to be just as important as making diner. If the family has time for T. V.
Then the family has time to learn. Setting aside 30 minutes each day before bed for family reading could be a good place to start.
Everyone has to read. Mom, Dad and the kids. No T.V. or radio. Just a well lit room and good reading materials.
Home work should always be encouraged to be done within an hour of the child being home from school.
Waiting until bed time is not a good idea. The kids get tired and cranky and they will not learn anything.
Doing home work when they arrive home before they can go play adds incentive to getting the work done.
It also allows the parent to schedule time in their schedule to be available to the child at that time also.
Allowing the child to see you read or do work at home will let them know that work is part of life.
Education does not just stop after high school or college. We are daily learning new things to make our life more full and valuable.
Be careful what you use as an incentive for your child to learn. Money just complicates things.
You should not have to pay your child to do home work. School is their career early in life. They need to realize it and except the responsibilities.
Most of all attend school functions and career days, parent conferences. Your child needs to know that you take their education seriously.
If you have any other great ideas on helping our children desire to learn. Please leave a comment and share them with us. Good education is always a plus for us parents.
