Many of our children today experience learning disabilities from time to time. How those issues are handled in school will often be the positive or negative that casts the shadow on how your child will view attending school altogether. This is why it is so very important for parents to sit down with their children at various times during the school year and actually do homework together.
There is no other way than hands on experience to know if your child is doing well in his studies or if they may be experiencing difficulties. If they are having trouble then it is obvious they need a tutor or some special attention to help them comprehend teaching concepts.
If a child feels lost and alone because they do not understand the concept that the teacher is using to solve problems, they may just draw inside themselves and try not to draw attention to themselves. If this goes on without being noticed by a busy teacher then your child is being set up to fail.
Children need to know that no one person can be good at everything. What is important is to try their best and to know they can ask for help and receive it.
I think this is one of the reasons that some parents decide to home school their children. My concern there is the lack of independence and their ability to work with other children.
All of us as parents want an open communication line between us and our kids. However at times and various ages that is like dreaming you own the lucky charms pot of gold. It just wont happen in every case.
You will find the concept of learning can very from school to school. Normal addition practices are just not "normal any more."
My daughter Angela is only 8 and a half. She is in second grade. I find myself reading over the examples already so that I do not teach her against the concept that the school is teaching her. It is not always easy. So if you do not understand something call the teacher up and don't be ashamed to say I need help with this so I can help my child.
When Jeff Foxworthy came out with the game show "Are you smarter than a fifth grader," I laughed after watching and listening to some of the answers the adults gave. The fact is, many of us are not as smart as today's fifth grader.
Learning techniques change drastically in a 20 year time scale. Parents who waited to have children. may need a brush up course on how to teach the basics when they become parents.
There are many levels of learning disabilities and most of our schools have found that not all children can just be labeled with a learning disability. They must be tested and observed to find the right placement that will best help them excel in their own abilities.
Tracking down the basic problem is what it is all about. Does your child have a vital learning disability or does he or she just need a little help understanding the basic concepts? You can help answer that if you sit with your child and observe them during homework time.
