One of the neatest things in life and the best way of learning is from History. It is good to instill a good love for history and facts from the past in every child.
Like teaching kids about coins. There are bright shiny new ones and there are some very old and rusty ones. Sometimes you even find a bright shiny old coin. Then you can talk about the value of this coin. Why it looks so good and how it is worth much more than the amount of a penny, nichols, dime or quarter now.
With adopted kids it is fun to sit down and to write down their own history. What they remember about their life before they came to you. Then put the journal away and go back in another month. Re read the things they wrote. It is impressive because most of the time they remember new things about other things that happened then too. Which can be added to the journal and kept for them to remember their past by.
This also helps in the healing of emotional traumas.
Each time they can remember a little more and heal a little more. Until one day they can read all the history and it does not hurt so much.
This is valuable in the future too because they may remember birth grand parents names and uncles and aunts and friends who lived near them. Which makes finding a biological parent much easier. It gives them a base of memories to start with.
It is nice to keep tracing their family history back past their parents. They may find that they come from a beautiful legacy of people. Which helps them to understand it was not all bad. They may have been related to Martin Luther King or Jimmy Durandee or Carl Marks. Everyone is famous for something and in most families there are just as many good people in the family tree as there are bad ones. If not more.
