One of the drawbacks of younger children is the good old issue of potty training.
I personally think that it has to be tailored to each child. Some kids catch on easy and there are others who just do not have a clue no matter how many trips you take to the potty room.
I was so lucky with my Angela. She just did not like being in a messy diaper. So we bought her little panties and she was a pro at potty training.
She preferred to use the big potty instead of her potty chair. We did not make a big deal of that we let her do it the way she felt most comfortable. Of course that meant we had to be there to hand her toilet paper for a few more months than normal.
So by the age of 13 months she was sleeping all night without any accidents and using the big potty. We did celebrate each time with her and praise her for such good work in learning to use the big potty.
Over the weekend we stayed with my nephew and his wife and kids. Each one of their children trained for the potty in different ways. We talked about ages and how they worked with each child.
Then we talked about their youngest who is 16 months old and has no clue as to why there is a need for a potty chair.
You can take her to the bathroom several times and make all sorts of happy faces and smiles when she does pee in the potty. However you can sit there with her for a long time and she will just wait till you pull up her big girl panties before she stands there and pees through them and on to the floor.
Her mom was getting a little upset. But you could clearly see that she was just not ready for potty training. She had no clue what it was all about.
The whole family is doing a team effort to train her now. They invite her in with them as they go potty so she can see them on the potty chair too. Everyone asks her if she needs to go pee pee or go to the potty. With a lot of consistency I think she will catch on in no time.
For some kids, seeing is believing. I am thinking Rebbecca is one of those kids.
