Older children are amazing at times. When we adopted Baby Angela (a biological sibling of our other children), our kids became instant nannies.
Angela did not have a chance to cry before one of the kids was tending to her needs. It wasn't long before her newness wore off on our son and he started playing out side again but never before giving her a kiss on the cheek. However the two girls were at arms about being the best sister. Of course our oldest daughter acted like a little mom again and we had to make her let April hold the baby.
She would sit and glare at April until I would take the baby and send both of them out the door to play. You can be assured that it didn't take long before they were both back inside and at it again.
They spoiled Angela so bad that I don't think she ever cried. I wondered if she could cry but then at 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. I was assured I was wrong. She would whimper a little and my husband would jump up as if the world was on fire.
I had to take classes in child life support because Angela was a crack baby. She had been born with large amounts of drugs in her system. This meant she needed wrapped tightly in her blanket to feel secure and that she had a hard time looking into our eyes. She also would have labored breathing which occurred mostly at night or after feeding.
At night I would sit in my rocking chair and snuggle her close and sing to her. I'd often pray when she would have moments when her breathing was labored.
At three months old we took her in for a good check up. She was forming breasts and they were growing larger than usual. They did an ultra sound on her and she had a cyst on her ovaries. They began to watch her closely.
One day I was at K-Mart and some man came over to me and he said to me, "Lady I am not a nut. I am a minister of the Gospel and God told me to lay hands on your baby and to pray for her."
Well, I had been brought up knowing that a little prayer can't hurt anyone so I took her in my arms and told him to go ahead. Right there in K-Mart this man said the most beautiful prayer over my baby. He said, "God touch this angel and fix her woman problems." And he told God to cleanse her blood and let it be normal. As amazingly as he appeared he went on his way.
The next doctor's appointment with Angela they did the usual tests. When we got the results the doctor said the cyst has dissolved and we can't find anything in her blood now. She is a normal healthy baby girl. Her breasts reversed and stopped growing. I told my husband it was the prayer in K-Mart that the older gentlemen had said.
From that point on our baby girl began to grow and to look at us straight in the eye and smile and giggle out loud.
Our older kids were such a blessing. They provided endless help in making sure the baby was well taken care of.
How wonderful to know that for the first time the kids began to show one another love and respect. Raising Baby Angela brought us all together even more than I ever knew could be possible.
