It is Opening Gun Season for deer hunting today. Our schools even gave all the kids the day off so the fathers and sons could go off and hunt together.

I know that there is a huge population of Deer this year. They have been prancing around and playing out in the fields at dusk for almost two months.
The harvest left them good grain and corn to feed upon. So there are an abundance of healthy deer out there.

I have never been one to like hunting. I do respect those who hunt and process the deer meat for eating. However I am not one to like hunting as just a sport.

Most of the kids today have no clue what guns are for. They think guns are just for scaring people and killing people. When in fact they were made to hunt with and provide food for families. They also brought protection to the home owner from bears and other wild animals when the settlers moved west ward into the hills and valleys that were filled with wild animals.

It wasn't long before guns ruled the land and people shot each other for sport and anger. Then the war began and the guns were fought to take land from the indians. So on and so forth.

Today we no longer need protection from wild animals of the forest. We need protection from wild people who have no respect for human life.

Today I will pray for the hunters out there and for the fathers who are passing on the tradition of hunting food for their families.

We will ask God to keep everyone safe and to watch over the hunters and the hunted.

Is this still a sport that fathers should teach children? I know my father would say yes. But my heart tells me I would not have learned much from watching a deer die. What do you think?
