Special Needs Children. Are they right for you and your family?
This is a question that a lot of adoptive families go through if they find adoption is a good way of life for their family.
Some moms who have a lot of time on their hands and stay at home a lot may find it so rewarding that they can be so much help to a child who needs them.
The range of disabilities is enormous, from very mild to very severe. One foster mom we know specializes in the care of severely impaired children. She has one child who can not get out of bed. He is on a breathing tube and has multiple issues that need her attentions every hour of the day and night.
As a retired ER Nurse she can provide this boy with what he needs in an at home living situation. At night she has a male nurse that the state helps pay for who comes in and relieves her so she can get some rest.
A few years ago she had one child pass away on her. Her heart was broken, even thought she knew that the child's quality of life was not so good down here on earth. She just missed his presence. She loved him just as much as she loves her other children.
I think she is an angel. Not many people can do what she does and do it so well. It takes a very precious person to be so selfless and to build their life around the care of others.
It is kind of funny because she looks at me and the children I have raised and she says there is no way she could have handled it. Then I look at her and I say the same about her and her special love for the severely impaired children she provides care for.
So if you have a lot of time or training in the care of special needs children, there are kids out there who could use your expertise. You could provide a loving home environment for a child who needs a family.
If you can't adopt, there are always special volunteers who are needed daily to help out foster and adoptive care givers. Be useful and Be Blessed.
