Strangers All Around Me

It was a normal Friday night. Dad was already drunk by the time I got home from school. Mom was using a mirror and a razor to cut her lines of cocaine.

I just came in and went to my room. I tried to ignore everything around me and concentrate on my homework.

The house was full of angry voices. Once again mom and dad were into it over something. I remember the screaming and the sound of someone falling down stairs. Then nothing but silence. I ran to see what happened and found my mom laying at the bottom of the stairs and she wasn't moving.

I yelled for my dad to help her. He just sat at the kitchen table with his head down, mumbling something. I ran next door to the neighbors house and called 911. I remember saying "Come quickly my mom isn't moving."

I ran back to the house and I knelt down beside my momma and begged her to talk to me. I was crying so hard I didn't even hear the police car arrive. The police man rushed me out of the way and into another room.

I remember sitting down in a chair and feeling my body melt down into it. With in minutes there were strangers all around me. I saw more flashing lights as a loud siren blurred all around us. Then it came to a screeching halt. Two men came in to the house and went down to check on my mom. My mom still was not moving.

Within minutes they had placed her on a stretcher and rushed her out the door and off into the night.
I prayed silently "God please let my momma be alright."

The police officers went into the kitchen to talk to my dad. Then they handcuffed my dad and tried to take him out to the police car. My dad was so drunk he couldn't even stand up on his own.

All I knew was something was terribly wrong. I was scared to death until I heard my grandma's voice. She was asking "What happened child? Where are your parents? Who are all these people? As she came through the door with my other brothers and sisters.

Grandma's soft soothing voice was all I could remember as the hot tears began to flow down my face.
Now that Grandma was here everything would have to be alright. She always made things alright for us.

After a few moments the police man pulled grandma to the side and told her that he had called children's services. They were on the way to pick us up. Grandma rushed us all off to a neighbors house to play.

She stayed there to deal with the Childrens Services and the police.

We told our neighbor what was happening and she called Grandma on the phone. She spoke with Grandma and the C. S. Worker. Our neighbor was a foster parent and agreed to help our Grandma take care of us until the court hearing. As long as the worker agreed and would allow us to be there at home with our Grandma.

We got lucky that night and there were no open foster homes. So we were allowed to stay with our neighbor and Go to court with our Grandma the next day.
