Teen Pregnancy

The door bell rang and the dogs started barking. I ran towards the door falling over one of the kid's shoes. When I got there and opened the door. There stood some girl's mom.

Her face a little flushed from crying she handed me an invitation to her 15 year old daughter's baby shower.

I could tell she was needing someone to talk to so I smiled and asked "Where have you registered your daughters Baby Shower. I'm sure my daughter will want to choose the perfect gift"

Before I knew it she was telling me how this baby was going to affect the whole family and change lives. Then she went in to how she could handle pregnancy but what if her daughter had AIDS now?
What if she lost her daughter?

Her daughter's biggest worry was "How do I tell my parents". With all the information on STDs on the front page and on TV commercials and the ads about SAFE SEX. How could she be pregnant? How did someone skip those and forget safe sex?

When the other mom was calm and went on her way, saying thank you and hugging me for listening to her worry. I simply sat down and scratched my head.

Last month we had gone through two different pregnancy tests with our teenage daughter (who is BiPolar). My heart went out to the mom but inside I wanted to go to the high school and scream out on a bull horn.

"What the hell are you kids thinking?" I know you don't listen to your parents but people the information is everywhere. It's not just teen parenting we are concerned with. It is your life.

When my daughter walked through the door a few moments later. I reached her the invitation. She said oh mom we have to go get her something special. I rephrased her comment. You mean "YOU" have to go get her something special. She is your friend. This is one shower I will not be attending with you.

A baby is a celebration of love and joy. That feeling belongs to a mature woman hopefully married or in a secure and loving relationship.

My daughters response was "Oh Mom" and she went on her way. Oh Mom is right. Her dilemma of the day became mine. Who will they listen to? Not even the cool teen heart throbs on TV got the message over to them that AIDS is a real Big Deal.

If your daughter is pregnant is not the life ending dilemma it used to be. It is now Oh My God she didn't use protection. Does she have HIV? Over reacting? Just concerned over protective MOMs? Or REALITY?

Invite a teen to answer that question and see what they have to say now.
