When we lived down state, my home was always full of the neighborhood kids. One of the boys I just adored. He came from a troubled home and without his grandma they would have ended up in foster care.
So he and his sisters hung out at our house with my kids a lot.
This morning I got a phone call. It was him on the line. He said "Shar" and his voice broke. He was in tears. The nurse took the phone and explained that he and two others were out in his car and they were doing fish tails. The cops clocked them at 80 mph. R.J. was driving and the car flipped.
R.J. was pretty beat up by the accident and so was the girl in the front next to him. But Cory (my neighbor's son from across the street there) was in critical condition. Swelling on the brain and they did not think he would make it.
R. J. is a feisty little guy with a lot of heart and he is very compassionate too. But he is the tough man. So of course he had his car all decked out to show off.
In today's teen world, they street race and do things like this with cars thinking it's all just fun. No one thinks that in one second the car can flip and someone can die. Now both lives hang in the balance. If Cory dies, R.J. will be tried for manslaughter.
R.J. was crying so hard he couldn't talk. He managed to say Shar pray. So that is what I have been doing all day long.

So parents my plea to you is to speak up and warn the kids. Tell them we know they enjoy the fun but life is to short to lose it because of fun and games. Cars are not toys. They are heavy machinery to transport people. Not to drag race or fish tail.
I would love to see some of the drag racers, Nascar and Stock Car personalities speak out on car safety. Maybe it would make a difference.
For right now I am just praying Cory makes it and R.J. grows up through this horrible incident.
