It was time for class to start and the teacher asked everyone to be seated. After the morning pledge of allegiance. She did attendance and told the children to prepare for their spelling tests.
All the children got out their pencils and paper. Breeanna was amazed as she looked around and saw brightly colored pencils in other classmates hands.
All day long she could not get her mind off those pencils. So after lunch she pretended to tie her shoes while the rest of the kids got in line for outside recess. When no one was looking she helped herself to one of her friend's pencils.
After recess was over the teacher called her class to order. She asked them to take out what they needed to do their math assignment.
All the children got out their math books, paper and, of course pencils. However after a few seconds one little girl started crying and raised her hand. She told the teacher her favorite pencil was missing and she could not use any other pencil but that one for her math.
The teacher assured her it had to be on the floor or something and went over to help her look. All the other kids also checked around to see if the pencil had fallen on the ground and had been kicked near them. No one could find the shiny, bright pencil.
The teacher let the little girl use her pencil and for the moment that seemed to be just great and the little girl stopped crying and brushed her tears away and did her math work.
That day when Breeanna arrived home she playfully displayed her new colorful pencil. Her sister was jealous and wanted to use it too. Breeanna let her sister use it, and she slipped it under her pillow for safe keeping.
The next day at school she saw another kid with a beautiful green pencil. She thought about how nice that would look in her room with her other new pencil. So once again she pretended to tie her shoe and she took the green pencil also.
Once again when lunch was over and the kids came back in from recess. They began to do their math and this time it was a little boy who yelled out that his pencil was missing. Once again everyone looked all around but the pencil could not be found.
Once again the teacher gave the little boy one of her own pencils to use and again he settled down thinking of how cool it was to use the teacher's pencil and did his work too.
This happened every day for a complete week and the teacher knew something was not right. She just could not put her finger on it yet but she knew she would get to the bottom of this missing pencil scheme.
That weekend Breeanna took out her new collection of brightly colored pencils and she played with them and drew pictures and once again her sister wanted to share. Breeanna was a little irritated that her sister wanted to make her share. So she refused.
Breeanna's sister began to scream and yell and in through the bedroom door came their Mom. She took all the pencils from the girls and gave them time out. When her husband came home she scolded him for not buying both girls the shiny new pencils. He should know that they would not share and would need their own.
He scratched his head and said what pencils? I didn't buy any colored pencils. The mom got the pencils and showed them to dad. Again he said he had not bought them. Mom knew she had not bought them either.
So where did they come from? The approached the girls and of course the little sister gave in and said they were Breeanna's and she wouldn't share.
Dad asked Breeanna where she got those new pretty pencils. At first she didn't know what to say and studdered a little. Then she said Oh Oh my friend gave them to me.
The dad smiled and said ok but you know you need to learn to share with your little sister so choose one of them and give it to her to write with.
Breeanna assured her dad that she would and then when dad and mom left the room she kicked her little sister and called her a cry baby. Then she gave her the ugliest one of the colorful pencils.
The weekend passed and it was time to return to school. Today was a little different. She didn't see any new pencils that she liked so after lunch she pretended to lose her pencil. Once again the teacher looked all around and nope... the pencil was nowhere to be found. So she let Breeanna use her pencil.
Well that was exactly what Breeanna had wanted. It was cool and special to use the teacher's pencil. At the end of the day the teacher was lining up the kids for the school buses.
The afternoon attendant needed something signed and the teacher remembered Breeanna had her pencil. She called to Breeanna and asked her if she could have her pencil back. Breeanna hesitated and then bent down and pulled the pencil from her sock. Then gave it to her teacher.
Just as if a light had gone on in the teachers head. She now knew how the pencils were disappearing. Someone was not putting them in their desk or coat pockets. They had slipped them in their socks. It all made sense.
That evening the teacher decided to call the parents of the children in her class. She spoke with each parent and told them to please not allow the children to bring in pretty pencils to class. Just the simple yellow #2 pencils would be enough. She told each parent that the children had been misplacing their colorful pencils and it was beginning to disrupt the class. So simple pencils were needed from now on.
When she called Breeanna's parents and spoke with them. They immediately knew where the beautiful pencils had gone. They assured the teacher that the pencils were safe and that Breeanna would be returning them the next morning.
The teacher was so relieved and looked forward to giving all the pencils back to the rightful owners the next day.
