In today's fast paced world.
Everyone seems to be in such a hurry. In the high schools it is very obvious that there are high percentages of teens having sex.

This is one reason parents need to have good communication going with their kids at a very young age. Sexual activity between younger teens is happening now at a more alarming age. By the time your children go to middle school. It is important to have talked with them about sex and sexually transmitted diseases.

In the world of foster parenting and adoption. Many of our children will already be exposed to sexual behaviors. Due to the fact that sexual abuse in children is also occurring at an alarming rate.

Promiscuity is one of the most important issues to deal with and be open about. The more you know about what is happening in your child's life. You can better help them to talk about choices and improve their self esteem and possibly avoid multiple partners as the unhealthy choice of sexually active teens.

If fear could just keep the kids safe from sex. It would be wonderful. However fear does not keep them from having sex. So they must have knowledge and understanding of how to keep themselves safe from the diseases and other issues out there that surround sexuality at a young age.

With the HPV, Herpes and HIV issues at hand. Everyone sexually active young woman should be seen and given a PAP smear every 12 months. By a GYN Physician. If they are not ready for this exam. Then they are not ready to be out there having sex.

Pregnancy used to be the issue that troubled most parents of yesterdays teens. Today it is the least of our worries with the issues of diseases more alarming.

Help keep your children on track and keep an open communication line. Talk about the use of condoms and how to keep their body safe.

I'm not training my 5 adopted children on the use of condoms, I'm teaching them about the use of faith, and a purpose for their lives way beyond sex and promiscuity.

Yes, they come with a knowledge of sex, but they need to be taught not how to have "safe" sex, rather what sex was created for. A loving act between two married people, man and woman.

Exactly Nichole,

Your are in fact teaching them the right way to respect themselves and to waite until they find that one life long love.

Some parents just avoid the subject and think it will go away.
We both know that is not going to happen. So either way you spin it. We have to speak openly with our kids about subjects like sex, faith, abstaining and truth.

Hugs,
Shar

This is a different perspective. My four youngest boys came home individually through single parent adoption, ages 9 thru 13.

The first, was a blonde, blue eyed, very good looking almost 13 year old. Worried about what he knew, I sat him down for the talk, two weeks after he came home. He quickly informed me he was NOT a virgin, after talking with him for a bit, I realized he was telling the truth. My talk was very different from what I had planed.

Kids will know about sex much earlier than you think, even if you don't say anything. Whichever direction you want to go with it, do it before they have been bombarded by peers.
