Well even with our safety rules all set in place and posted. Someone didn't pay close enough attention. We had our first bike accident and everyone scrambled for the emergency kit.
Angela hardly ever gets hurt but when she does. She does it well. She took off on her bike to fast. That was her first mistake. The bike slid on the rocks and gravel next to the road. She went flying off of the bike. She scraped both knees, her wrist, her ankle and her shoulder.
Daddy was the first one to her. He swooped her up in his arms and headed toward the house. After checking her out to make sure there was no broken bones and the bleeding areas were just minor scrapes and scratches.
We began to clean the wounds with peroxide and to put neosporin on them and cover them with a band-aide.
Of course she cried all the way through it and daddy carried her into the bedroom. Placed her on the bed and turned on her favorite cartoons. Just to keep her mind off the boo boo's.
Later on after she calmed down and knew she was not hurt seriously. We reminded her that if she had put on her helmet, knee pads and elbow pads.....Most of her booboos would not be there.
All that safety gear is not fun to put on but it sure does have a purpose. To keep her safe. Preventing little scrapes and scratches is important
especially to a child who does not heal well, with diabetes or immune system issues.
Angela has been sore for a few days and we have noticed that she is a little more careful even stepping down off the porch. We are hoping that this little accident has taught her a lesson and that she will learn to use her safety gear for biking.
Listening and respecting the rules of safety are to different things. We hope that Angela has learned her lesson and will respect the safety rules and understand their purpose is to help her be safe.
We shall see. So far so good. Safety First.
