If your children are anything like the normal every day lazy lumps in my house...
You will need creative plans to help choose who does what and when on the chore charts.
We tried to have a family meeting with a chore list.
We passed it around and everyone had to pick at least two chores from the list and volunteer to do them. Then the other left over chores would be assigned by mom or dad. Each child ending up with 3 chores per week. Other than general cleaning of their own rooms and the messes they made.
Well it took us a long time to get that chore chart up and running. We would have a new family meeting each month and rotate the chores so everyone was given a fair chance to learn all chores on the chart.
We thought making choices would be a good start for the kids.
Boy were we wrong. It sounded good but after the third family meeting no one wanted anything to do with some of the chores.
So we went to writing all the chores down and putting them into a hat. We had a family meeting and every kid had to choose 3. Seemed fair to us.
This worked for the most part. Because it was luck of the draw.
How ever you do it in your house. That gives you an effective system. Is what you go with. Learning to work together as a team is the most valuable lesson.
Not everyone likes washing dishes or taking out the trash or mowing the lawn. But all of these things must get done....and mom and dad can't do everything.
If you have any helpful hints on how you get your kids to do chores...take a moment and share them with us. It could cut down on some of our family meetings and long chore lists. All of your comments are welcomed.
