Yost Gets Life In Prison

For six and one half years there has been on going questions surrounding the death of a seven year old Michigan girl.

The mother, Donna Yost, has spent the last 288 days in jail while awaiting her trial, conviction and sentencing. Which occurred this past week.

The seven year old died from an overdose of prescription pain pills.

The question was how the child was able to get ahold of the pain pills and how did she come to take so many. Which eventually caused her death. The seven year old girl died in 1999.

The investigation led to the arrest and prosecution of her own mother. The theory of the prosecution is that the mother had the prescription pain killers and gave the child the overdose and thus caused the child's death.

The mothers attorney argued that the mother did have the pain pills but that the daughter who had been very depressed had some how gotten the pills and taken the overdose on her own. Thus causing her own death.

After six and one half years the jury's verdict was "Guilty." The Judge's sentence was "Life In Prision."

Donna Yost did not speak in remorse of her daughters death but chose to tell the court how wrong they were and how they had done her wrong.

Mrs. Yost's attorney says that there are "several" issues that they can and will appeal this judgement on. Mean while Donna Yost will remain in jail.

This is just one more case of a parent dropping the ball of responsibility. Donna Yost failed to put the medication in a place out of reach of her child.

I know if it were my child who had taken my medication and died from it, I would not need anyone to find me guilty. My own guilty would destroy my life.

I know that yes a seven year old is old enough to know where mom keeps her medicine. I know my eight year old knows all about my medication and what it is for and why it is needed. She has been taught how to give me my insulin injections. She knows the danger of pricking her finger with my needle and getting insulin into her system. She knows where I keep my medication. She knows what Nitroglycerin is and how it is placed under mommy's tongue if my heart hurts. She also knows how to call 911.

So yes it is possible that the child knew where the pills were and that Donna did have them put in a safe place. Yes the child could have gotten them herself and yes she might of taken them also.

I have seen a lot of young children suffer from depression but not so much so that they would be of such intelligence to take a planned overdose and end their own life. But then again I do not have a degree in Child Psychology.

I am sure there are other case issues which led the Jury to the verdict of guilty. I am also sure that the attorneys will waste years of tax payers' money trying to over turn the verdict.

All I know is that I have trained my daughter to know good pills and bad pills and what is medication and what is not. But if my daughter got hold of my medication and took it and it caused her death, the personal guilt alone would take me to my grave with her. I would not care about my life. I don't think I would have much of a life without my daughter.

What do you think? Is Donna Yost guilty of child neglect for having the medications where her daughter could get hold of them? Is that enough to convict her for life in prison? If Donna knew her child was depressed, why didn't she make sure that she sought help for her daughter and kept her out of such dangers?

I guess all we do know is that an overdose of pain pills can cause the end of a little girl's life. That in itself is sad enough.
